Familiar with ‘Grill Culture’ from time spent living in Canada, Richard has honed hisgrilling skills and enjoys passing on the knowledge he has gained.
He enjoys touring with the airstream where he demonstrates the versatility of a BBQ and just how underutilised it is in Britain.
For Richard, a real misnomer that most people have about using their barbecue is that it has to be warm, sunny and dry. When roasting, smoking or baking food on your barbecue (gas or charcoal) the results are much more moist than if cooking them inside in your oven. This is because a barbecue draws in damp air, which is then circulated around your food.
Weber Factoid:
Weber grills originate and are designed from Chicago, Illanois where the average Winter snowfall ranges from 9.8 inches (24.9 cm) up to 89.7 in (228 cm) and the average Winter temperature is -18oC. None of our barbecues need to be covered to comply with warranty requirements and are designed to be left outdoors year-round!

The Buzz.

Here at B&Q, we are supporting Friends of the Earth in calling for a National Bee Action Plan – hoping to make 2013 the year of the bee.

Why bees?

Bees are small, bright, and powerful plant pollinators. Watching them buzz tirelessly from flower to flower is a delightful show of nature.

Vital to healthy crops and wildflowers, bees and other pollinators make up to a third of our daily menu possible. Without them, many of our favourite fruits and vegetables would be harder to find and significantly more expensive.

In fact, alternative ways of pollinating would cost UK farmers over £1.8 billion a year, and overall, bees could be worth up to £440m to the UK economy.

Bees have had a lot of recent excitement for good reason - a startling number of them have mysteriously vanished worldwide. In the last decade, we’ve lost an estimated 30% of the bee population.

Here in the UK 75% of our bees have disappeared in the last 100 years.

Disease, chemicals, and habitat loss are all possible culprits, but so far, research is inconclusive. What we are certain of: bees are drastically declining worldwide, and urgent action is needed.

What we’ve done

As the UK’s No1 garden centre, at B&Q we realise we have an impact, and strive to take responsibility for it.

We are aware of concerns over the potential association of certain neonicotinoids with the decline in the bee population and, whilst there are plenty more steps along the journey, we’ve led by example and withdrawn products containing imidocloprid, a neonicotinoid, from our shelves.

Over the coming months we will be offering a range of help and advice to our gardening customers – from how to build bee cafés and plant bee friendly flowers, to providing bee friendly labels to helping customers maintain a safe environment for bees in their gardens.

What you can do now

In the meantime, LIKE our Facebook post that supports Friends of the Earth’s call for a National Bee Action Plan.

Aiming high, we want – 10,000 likes by April 25th – think we can do it?

When we reach our goal, we’ll take your likes to Owen Paterson, Secretary of State DEFRA with a call to stakeholders to draw-up a plan in-line with scientific evidence which:

·        Ensures the way we farm our food and plan our towns and cities is good for bees
·        Helps farmers, gardeners and park keepers to reduce use of chemicals that harm bees
·        Protects Britain’s wild and honey bee species and other pollinators

Together, we can do our bit, and call for action.

Want to see more?

Coming soon: Our Verve flowers will host the “Perfect for Pollinators” label, so look out for it when buying your potted plants!
